By morning, Ava and Henri’s honeymoon had turned into a disaster.

A frantic call woke Jasmine at six o’clock. At first, she couldn’t figure out what the buzzing noise was.

When she answered, Ava was wailing on the other end of the line.

“Good heavens, what’s happened?” Jasmine said quickly.

Ava continued to sob, talking incoherently but Jasmine couldn’t make out what she was saying.

“Is Henri okay?” Jasmine had a sudden panic attack that Henri had died in the middle of the night. Or left her for another woman.

“We’re leaving on the first flight out of Naples,” Ava finally choked out.

There was a crash and a clattering noise. Voices speaking urgently.

“What’s happened?” Jasmine asked. “Is your father—”

Henri’s voice came through the receiver. “Ava’s father has taken a turn for the worse. We just got the call an hour ago. Ava is very distraught as you can imagine.”

“I’m so sorry, Mr. Grimaldi,” Jasmine told him, unable to imagine what it would be like to have her own father in dire health after just celebrating the happiest day of your life and on your idyllic honeymoon. “What can I do to help?”

“Absolutely nothing, Miss Cervantes. I’ve already arranged our travel to the United States.”

“My deepest condolences to Ava and you. We’ll work out the final details about the honeymoon after—when you’re both ready.”

Suddenly, Ava’s voice came through again. “Don’t worry, I’ll be contacting the Vice-President of Standing Ovation Honeymoons. And that photographer better not take off with our pictures.”

That’s what Ava was worried about at this very moment?

Well, of course, she was. That was part of her personality and character.

“I’ll contact Mr. Balotelli this morning and retrieve his digital files. I’ll encrypt them and send them to you as soon as I can, Ava. I’m very sorry about your father again. I’ll pray that all will be well.”

“Thank you,” Ava said crisply, and then the phone went dead.

“Whew,” Jasmine said, falling back against her pillows. “Poor woman. Poor Henri.”

She wasn’t sure who she had more empathy for. She was sorry they hadn’t been able to finish enjoying the fabulous trip she had arranged. It wasn’t fair to a newlywed couple. And Ava had worked really hard on making everything as perfect as possible.

Jasmine closed her eyes for a moment, trying to regroup after being woken up out of a deep sleep. Actually, a deep dream about Troy. She took a moment to relive some of the better moments, then glanced at the time on her cell phone. It was time to get going.

Oh, wait. The Blue Grotto was off for the newlyweds.

“Oh!” Jasmine said in the next breath. “Troy and I will use the tickets!”

Quickly, she texted him. Don’t purchase more tickets this morning! Ava and Henri are on their way to Naples to fly home. Her father is worse. All other trip plans are immediately canceled. But I’ll meet you in an hour for breakfast! Will you still take me to the Blue Grotto?

Troy’s response was quick. Absolutely! We’ll make an entire day of it.
